Insurance for taxi drivers investigates cyclists jumping red lights and the cost to taxi drivers

TAXI AND CYCLIST

Insurance for taxi drivers has found out that black cab public hire taxis have caught cyclists jumping red lights in London using their hidden dashboard cameras. Out of the 364 cyclists caught on camera 194 were caught on camera jumping the red lights.  Cyclists jumping red lights can increase the chance of a collision with a vehicle, as cyclists do not have to have insurance to be on the road, insurance companies factor the cost of this risk into taxi driver insurance policies.

Any cyclists caught jumping red lights risk being fined £50. After conducting a survey the Institute of Advanced Motorists found that of the 1600 cyclists surveyed 14 percent admitted to jumping red lights regularly and 57 percent admitted to having jumped a red light at least once. The increasing risk of an accident for taxi drivers because of cyclists jumping red lights may cause taxi insurance companies to increase the price of their policies in London where there is a higher concentration of black cabs and taxis in general.
